what to email your list [steal my strategy for $0]

Two seconds before I said,

“hey everyone! Welcome to my live training today where I’ll teach you…” the other day, I was wiping away tears.

I’d just found the red string my Dad wore around his wrist for the last few years of his life after my Mom tied it on him during chemo (long story lol. The short version: he loved red and my mom — who he’d been divorced from for over 30 years. Yes, you read that right.)

While my Dad had cancer, and definitely since he passed this summer, there have been so many times when I’ve chosen to show up as I am.

Whether it was hopping on a podcast interview after I’d had an ugly cry, writing inspirational emails when I didn’t feel very hopeful myself, or filming a whole bunch of “important” reels in my favorite local farm t-shirt —

I chose to show up.

Maybe it’s because I had brain surgery a few weeks after I started my business, or that I became my Dad’s caregiver at 30 that I was pushed out of the nest like a baby bird in her first flight.

But if I’ve learned anything over the past 6 years of entrepreneurship, it’s that showing up is (more than) half the battle.

Hopefully you know me well enough by now to know that what I’m NOT saying is to push yourself to exhaustion, show up constantly, or to toxic-positivity yourself into not slowing down. No, no, no. Slow down. Don’t show up. Not showing up is 100% an option.

But there’s also a practicality and privilege here. It’s not really an option, or a reality, to only show up when everything in your life is gravy.

If that was what I waited for? I wouldn’t be here chatting with you today.

When my Dad got sick, I had a $90k-ish year. I had a multi 6-figure year the year after that. And 7+ figures every year after that.

I’m also not “just” a grieving person or the daughter of a cancer victim. I’m an unapologetically ambitious person, business woman, wannabe chef, wife, friend, dog mom, environmentalist, avid reader, animal advocate… the list goes on.

So I choose to show up.

A few weeks ago when I shared the (now) very popular Episode 65 “How to Build Your Email List” of On Your Terms, so many of you reached out and said,

“This is so helpful — but WHAT do I email my list? I don’t know what to say, so I just never end up emailing them.”

We’ve got to show up there, too. Whether we know the perfect thing to say or have any strategy yet. Building an engaged, active email community is about showing up and strategy.

In Part II of this email list building podcast series, I sat down and spilled my email marketing beans about what to email your list.

Are you going to have to write emails sometimes when you don’t know the perfect thing to say? Or send out an email that might not appear in the Guinness book of world’s best emails anytime soon?

Yep! It’s part of the job.

But I want to help you have more clarity and intention around “just showing up” when it comes to your email list so that you create an engaged, converting, and active email community.
