How I’ve written a book + run my 7-figure biz

Practical Get-Stuff-Done Tips (that actually work)

I’m in the thick of it with editing my book (it comes out April 2025! Sign up to be the first to know when it’s available for pre-sale.)

My final edits are due to my publisher in ~2 weeks and I’m knockin ’em out like Tyson.

It’s taken me a while to find my groove — learning how to write my book and run my business at the same time has been like…

I love lucy Gif
client questions, write content, edit my book, record a podcast, host a training, film videos, answer emails, HELP

I’ve implemented a few productivity “hacks” that have helped me feel that seatbelt-click level of satisfaction with where I’m at with my book and my business.

I’m nervous these won’t be helpful to you (maybe you’ve heard them all before?), but sometimes you have to hear things a few times, or in a different way, for it to stick. comment below when you’re done and tell me which one clicked for you.

Here are 3 “hacks” I’ve implemented to help me knock out editing 80,000+ words of my book, managing a multi-7-figure business, a team, and a semblance of a life:

1️⃣ EAT THE FROG… BUT PICK THE RIGHT FROG ????

I know you’ve heard to “eat the frog” more times than Taylor’s shown during a Chiefs game — but here goes nothing.

The idea behind “eating the frog” is to do the most important thing first.

I’ve tried this many times before, but I used to eat the wrong damn frog.

Before, I thought my business tasks were most “important” and needed to get done before I could write or edit my book.

But writing/editing my book takes the most amount of attention, creativity, and focused-attention of anything I’ve ever done (at least since the Bar Exam. Nothing will ever be as difficult as that.)

So when I put them last, I didn’t have the energy to write.

Are my business tasks equally as important? Aren’t they all “frogs” too? Of course!

But instead of arbitrarily picking what sounds “most important,” I’m approaching the “eat the frog” tactic with “what takes the most amount of my creative energy and attention” instead. What won’t you have the energy or focus to do if you put it off ’til later?

Writing content, creating courses or programs, and building your business requires lots of creativity and outward energy.

If you’re going to produce really good content/work, attack your creative endeavors before you consume everyone else’s. Protect that energy.

☀️ For me, that means my day* sorta looks like this:

  • 6:30am: Wake up, eat breakfast, have coffee, meditate, workout or stretch, shower.
  • 9am: First thing’s first: make a list of personal tasks for the day and business/book tasks.
    • Put my phone FAR out of reach and out of sight. Delete social apps. Put on relaxing music. Set my timer for 50 mins.
    • Focused frog-work for 50 minutes, followed by a 5-10 minute MINDFUL break (no scrolling or screens. Take a walk, talk to someone, stretch, breath). Repeat.
  • 12:30/1pm: Break for lunch and workout, if I didn’t this morning.
  • 1-5pm: back to my 50 mins on/5 mins off split.
    • If my frog-work is done, this is when I tackle admin tasks, emails, social replies, etc.
  • 5-ish: shut down my computer, clean my desk (aka move all of my mugs), and head into my wind-down routine (shower, PJs, cook dinner, post-dinner walk, TV, read, bed).

*This is a typical day during a short period in a crazy time in my business. This kind of work output wouldn’t be sustainable, but you might go through it when you are starting your business, creating a new product, or starting a new marketing channel.

2️⃣ FUEL YOURSELF

I’ve talked about this many times before, but I truly believe you should treat yourself like an athlete… even if your Olympic sport is typing.

It’s key to fuel your body with nourishing foods/meals, hydrate properly, and move your body in a way you love.

During super busy times, quick, healthy meals are always the hardest to have on hand.

Here’s what I do, meal-wise, when business things are stressful:

  • Salad kits: I love Trader Joe’s elote, southwestern, avocado ranch, and mediterranean kits. I grab a rotisserie chicken for the week, add whatever veggies I have on hand to bulk it up, and voila – a meal!
  • Buy fun drinks: If you’re motivated by that type of thing like I am. During heavy work times, my fridge is loaded with Spindrift, coconut water, electrolyte water, Poppi, Ollipop, and WildWonder.
  • Frozen stuff: combine a bag of cauli gnocchi, whatever veggies you have, and a dollop of pesto (I follow this recipe) or toss TJ’s frozen dumplings with fresh salad greens, chili crisp, and tomatoes (trust me, just follow her recipe. It’s amazing and takes 6 mins.)

3️⃣ FIND YOUR WAY

“You’re a beast. I literally don’t understand how you do it. They need to study you…” my friend said to me yesterday after I told her I’d edited my book for 6 hours/day every day last week.

If I became the 6th Power Ranger, my superpower would be a freakish ability to produce an insane amount of content/writing/output in a very short period of time. As I always tell my friends, it’s the only talent I have… don’t take this away from me lol.

But the way I do things isn’t objectively the right way, or even a better one. Find what works best for you.

The only way I can work like this is that I know myself well enough to know what I need to recharge.

I can only edit for 6 hrs/day if I:

  • have a solid morning routine that sets my day on the path I want it to
  • don’t spend more time on social than I need
  • EAT, hydrate, stretch, sleep
  • Delineate work time and personal time
  • Watch mind-numbing TV that requires zero brain power
  • Ask for help, from my family, friends, and team. I’ve shared how I’m feeling ???? right now, which has meant that my Professor-husband has to have his in-depth intellectual convos with someone else for a bit lol

Plus, I know this period is temporary. If you’re creating your online course, or building out your client programs — you’ll have to put your head down and get it done, but it own’t be like this forever.

So, I’m a little nervous sharing this with you! I’m just not sure if it was helpful. But since we’re friends, you know my brain is more scrambled than an omelette at this point.

Ok, back to editing! Setting my timer now…

When my buzzer goes off in 50 mins, I better see your comment below, telling me whether any of these tips were helpful to you.

Subscriber Question of the Week

“Can I have more than 1 DBA under the same LLC? What if they’re different businesses?”

In most states, yes! Some states allow up to 50 dba’s. If you want to create different businesses, most attorneys don’t recommend using one LLC to create multiple dba’s for those businesses. The reason? You expose each business to liability to one another if they’re under the same “umbrella.” If you want to manage multiple businesses safely, meet with a local-to-you small business attorney for personalized advice.

(PS People often mistake thinking they need to have different “businesses” for their marketing channels or offers, even though those offers/channels are for the same business. If you have a podcast, YouTube channel, or even different types of offers — that doesn’t typically require a d/b/a or separate business. They’re just different offers and channels for one business.)
