Afraid to Get Back to Your Business After a Break? Read This First
I took my AirPod out of my ear for what must have been the ninth time to answer the same question.
“Sam, where have you been?”
This is exactly why I didn’t want to come back here.
I have this bad habit of building things up in my mind to be way bigger, or way worse, than they usually turn out to be.
When I hurt my foot badly playing tennis this summer, it forced me to stop everything: tennis, personal training, running, biking, even walking, for a few weeks.
After almost two months off, I finally went back to the gym today to test out what I could do.
I had an entire dramatic scene playing out in my head beforehand about what it would be like. I didn’t want to answer questions about where I’d been, what was going on with my foot, why I hadn’t been around. We have a very “close” gym community.
Turns Out, My Anxiety Was Right
I got interrupted and asked, nonstop, where I’d been. And honestly, it is nice. The people there genuinely care and treat each other like family.
But it was exactly what I was worried would happen.
What This Has to Do With Your Business
I imagine you might be nervous about jumping back into something in your business right now.
Maybe it’s sending your email list a newsletter after your hands were full with the kids all summer. Maybe it’s finally sitting down to take a crack at that course you’ve been telling everyone is coming soon.
You might be worried your people are wondering where you’ve been, or why you haven’t shown up in a while. Maybe you don’t feel like explaining yourself, or admitting that, honestly, you sort of liked taking it easier for a while.
Here’s the Good News
Your audience probably isn’t as tuned in as my gym friends. They likely haven’t noticed. They’ve been busy with their own kids, pets, friends, and families too. Maybe they’ve had their own version of an aging parent calling constantly, or their own summer that got away from them.
They’re not keeping a tally of how many emails you did or didn’t send.
Most stories like this end with, “see, it wasn’t as bad as we thought.” But I wanted to share this one because even if whatever you’re worried about turns out to be true when you come back, life still goes on.
And discomfort is worth the investment in who you’re becoming.
The Weights Aren’t Getting Any Lighter
If you don’t get back to your email list, or finally start building that course, when will you?
Will it ever feel more comfortable than right now?
The longer you wait, the heavier it feels. That doesn’t change on its own. Only showing back up does.
