Why I Stopped Overcomplicating My Business (And How It Made Me Millions)

After the ink dried on my book deal contract, I sat around waiting for trumpets to blare. I imagined someone arriving at my door carrying an official document on a red-velvet pillow, some kind of ceremonial kick-off to the whole thing.

In reality? I just had to open a Google doc and start writing.

That gap between what I expected and what actually happened says everything about how we approach building a business. We think there has to be some grand, complicated process. A secret formula. A hidden door we just haven’t found yet.

There isn’t.

The Question I Keep Hearing

I’ve been on an unintentional podcast interview tour lately, and I’ve hosted a book club for my book, When I Start My Business, I’ll Be Happy. And when people talk to me about my business — my six-figure monthly funnel, my four-day $500K launches — I can always sense the question simmering just beneath the surface of what they’re actually asking:

Can it really be that easy?

The honest answer is: somewhere in between.

I’ve worked hard for ten years to build what you see today. I definitely downplay how much I work (unintentionally), but I also forget how much I can get done in a short window of time. My friend Jen always tells me that my downtime is everyone else’s full-time.

Still — and this part matters — my business is very intentionally simple.

What “Simple” Actually Looks Like

Here’s what my business does NOT have:

  • A gigantic team (I have one full-time employee, one hourly employee, and one part-time contractor — all incredible)
  • A business coach (though I do have an amazing mindset coach)
  • A course I bought to rocket my way to success

It doesn’t look like what most people picture when they imagine a multi-7-figure online business. And that’s exactly the point.

Why Most Businesses Feel So Hard

I’d argue most businesses don’t succeed — or don’t feel as sustainable — because their owners make it that way. Not on purpose, but by instinct. We go searching for the complication. We assume that if something feels too simple, we must be missing something. So we add more offers, more platforms, more strategies, more noise.

Building a business is a test of temptation: are you going to keep your eyes on your own paper, or are you going to let them wander on the off chance you find something better?

The wandering is what gets people. It’s what keeps businesses stuck.

The Real Key to My Success

I’m known for one thing. I am the legal person — the attorney-turned-entrepreneur that online coaches and creators come to when they need to get their legal house in order. Not the biggest social media following. Not a New York Times bestseller (yet!). Just one clear, consistent thing.

And because my business is that simple, it’s easy for people to think of me when it’s time to buy.

That’s it. That’s the strategy.

When you try to be everything to everyone, you become memorable to no one. But when you plant your flag on one thing and stay there, you become the obvious choice in your space.

What to Do With This

Stop looking for the complication in something that can be simple if you let it be.

Simplicity isn’t a shortcut — it’s a long game. It’s the thing that makes your business sustainable, scalable, and easy for your audience to understand. The simpler your business, the easier it is for someone to think of you, recommend you, and buy from you.

You have to become known for your one thing. And to do that, you have to resist every urge to add, expand, and complicate before you’ve mastered what’s already in front of you.

Start with the Google doc. The trumpets come later.

Online Legal Updates

You’ve probably heard about it by now: creators are getting AI-cloned and used in content/ads without their consent. No bueno.

But have no fear! Taylor Swift is here to save the day…

Taylor’s pushing us into a new-era of AI lawsuits with her recent trademark filing to protect her voice and literal image.

Although sounds like Netflix’s “ta-dummm” are currently protected under “sound marks” (a type of trademark not often utilized), a celebrity’s spoken voice has not been tested or filed before (besides Matthew McConaughey also filed to protect his).

Taylor’s music/lyrics are protected by copyright law, but it doesn’t protect her actual voice saying/singing things that aren’t in her songs. So if someone nabs her voice from a clip and uses it to create “new” content saying something she’s never said before… technically speaking that’s “OK” under current laws.

Although she’s only filed to protect “Hey, it’s Taylor,” and “Hey, it’s Taylor Swift,” the idea is that she could go after anyone who uses her voice under trademark law’s “confusingly similar” standard.  Here’s her application, in case you want to see it!)

This is very new and developing — so I’ll keep you all posted!
