Why I really started a podcast

When It’s Not So Black and White

“I’m just not okay doing that…”

^ You just saw someone in your industry making statements like “everyone should always pay off debt first” or “you should always eat 3 eggs for breakfast everyday.”

You see people saying things about your niche that you’re like, “wellllll, that’s not exactly it…” or “errrm, that could use some context.”

Whether we’re talking about eggs or high-interest savings accounts, it’s really dangerous — legally speaking (and allergy speaking, in the eggs example!) — to make absolute statements online.

Liability and anaphylaxis aside, absolute statements without context, nuance, and alternatives don’t help you build a business on your terms, which is core to my business values, either.

But social media rewards people who yell the loudest.

Want to go viral? Say something spicy, take a firm absolute stance, and invite the trolls to disagree.

Four years ago I had to re-film a 15-second Reel I was trying to shoot about business insurance six times.

Feeling pressured to cram in my valuable tip, responsibly cover all the legal bases, and simultaneously capture and maintain everyone’s attention felt like trying to juggle 3 impossible tasks at once.

That’s why I started my podcast, On Your Terms®️, 4 years ago today.

I wanted to create a space where I could responsibly help you dive into topics like how to pay yourselfthe mindset it takes to make $300k in a week, and how to price your offers.

I could’ve filmed a 30-second reel saying, “here’s how I made $338k in 4 days!” and made it sound simple.

But that doesn’t help you grow your business, especially not on your terms.

There’s no “one and only one” way to build your business, launch a product, or send a newsletter.

You need to know the thinking behind strategies — the mechanism, as my mom called it — not just what the strategy is.

You can carve your own path when someone teaches you what goes into making a path in the first place.

Then you can create strategies that work better for you than mine would.

Here’s the point:

I hate how much social media distorts things for you.

Things in business are rarely as black/white as some make it appear.

There’s so much nuance to the hacks and strategies I see being marketed to you, yet we’re endlessly scrolling hoping to discover the answer to something that doesn’t exist.

If this bothers you about your industry, too — consider making content that gives you space to stretch and breathe.

Although I’m technically writing to you today to celebrate 250 (!!) episodes of my podcast, On Your Terms®️, which I started to create deeper connection with you, explore nuance, and allow your brain to step off the dopamine train…

I also wanted to remind you why it’s important to choose a content medium (ie, YouTube, podcast, blog, Substack, etc.) that you actually enjoy.

There’s no way I’d have stuck to my podcast for four years, or produced 250+ episodes, if I didn’t also love it.

If you’ve never listened to my podcast before, comment below and let me know if you will now!

If you have listened, I’d love to know what you’d like to hear more of from me!

To celebrate 250 (incredibly nuanced) episodes, I answered all of your burning questions about:

  • how my podcast supports my business
  • my mindset starting my podcast (vs. the one I have now, which is very different); and
  • the biggest mistake and regret I have about how I approached my podcast at the start
